Now that you have created your list of potential donors, it’s time to think about your approach. Draft out emails and snail mail letters tailored to your individual groups. For example, your appeal to activist friends may have a different tone than that sent to your family members or coworkers. Include information about what you’re doing, why you’re doing it, and how they can help.
Some key steps to consider in your approach:
1. Identify the need you are addressing.
2. Explain why it is important to you — what's your personal connection to the issue?
3. Share what you are doing about it.
4. Ask your donor to take a specific action. For example: “Will you support me with a donation of $50, $100, or even $250?” Asking for a specific amount produces better results than an open-ended question like “Will you consider making a donation?”
Below is a sample fundraising email you can use as a basic template. Feel free to edit and customize to reflect a message and voice that is authentic to you, adding dollar amounts you feel comfortable with, and working in your own story. Or read it over and start from scratch.
Make sure to prominently include the link to your personal fundraising page in the body of your email.
Hello [THEIR NAME],
Will you support me to march for democracy as part of the Democracy Spring campaign this April?
Democracy Spring is a mass civil disobedience campaign aimed at creating a breakthrough, watershed moment in the fight for democracy. We are organizing thousands of people to march to Washington, D.C. this April and to participate in mass nonviolent action on a historic scale, demanding that Congress take immediate action to ensure free and fair elections for all.
2016 is shaping up to be the most expensive, billionaire-dominated, and voter suppression-marred election in modern history, presenting us with an incredible challenge and a powerful opportunity to intervene in business-as-usual and catapult the issue of our rigged political system onto center stage.
We will begin with a 10-day, 140-mile march from the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia to the nation’s Capitol in Washington D.C., where we will demand that Congress make the 2016 elections free and fair for all citizens, regardless of wealth.
I am tremendously excited about what we could achieve this Spring and beyond. I want to march for [NUMBER] days as part of the campaign, but I need your help. Will you support me with a contribution of $25, 50, or even $100?
Your contribution will go directly towards my food, lodging, and support vehicle costs for the march.

I truly appreciate your support.
