Now that you have created your list of potential donors, it’s time to think about your approach. Draft out emails and snail mail letters tailored to your individual groups. For example, your appeal to activist friends may have a different tone than the message to your family members or coworkers. Include information about what you’re doing, why you’re doing it, and how they can help.
Some key steps to consider in your approach:
1. Identify the need you are addressing.
2. Explain why it is important to you — what's your personal connection to the issue?
3. Share what you are doing about it. How does their support make a real difference to you?
4. Ask your donor to take a specific action. For example: “Will you support me with a donation of $50, $100, or even $250?” Asking for a specific amount produces better results than an open-ended question like “Will you consider making a donation?”
Below is a sample fundraising email you can use as a basic template. Feel free to edit and customize to reflect a message and voice that is authentic to you, adding dollar amounts you feel comfortable with, and working in your own story. Or read it over and start from scratch.
Make sure to prominently include the link to your personal fundraising page in the body of your email.
Hello [THEIR NAME],
Will you support me to fight for a democracy that works for all of us?
This September, I will be attending a national training put on by Democracy Spring, a grassroots movement organization committed to ending the corruption of big money in politics and protecting the right to vote. Last April, they/we organized the largest civil disobedience action of the 21st century, with over 1,300 people arrested on the steps of the US Capitol, demanding free and fair elections.
They/we were able to call national attention to our broken democracy and illustrate to the American people that we are going to fight to fix it. 2016 is shaping up to be the most expensive, billionaire-dominated, and voter suppression-marred election in modern history. We have an incredible challenge and a powerful opportunity to intervene in business-as-usual and catapult the issue of our rigged political system onto center stage.
That's why I've volunteering—along over 100 others—to be a grassroots leader right here in [YOUR CITY], to drive a local team committed to taking nonviolent direct action to challenge the status quo of big money corruption and voter suppression and to lift up and elect those who commit to pass sweeping reforms that would give us a real and equal democracy.
To get ready for action, I need to get trained. I will be going to Millstone, NJ this September for a 4-day intensive training to learn the story, strategy, and structure of how this movement will work and how together, we can win.
But I need your help. Will you support me with a contribution of $25, 50, or even $100?
Your contribution will go directly towards my food, lodging, and training materials.
